Its no secret that I love my job. But its always a good idea to get to know a couple before the wedding day if possible and one of the best ways to do that is an Engagement Session. Be that as it may I know that for many clients this might be their first time having professional photos taken together. This can lead to some nervousness at the start of the session. If your Engagement Session is coming up and you aren’t sure what to wear or how to prepare, don’t worry I got you covered. ?
- About what time should we schedule our session?
Although I will always schedule your session around your calendar and what works best for you there is a best time of day to have photos taken. Now I will schedule whatever time of day you like and give you the most amazing photos possible, however about 2 hours before sunset is the prettiest time of day. This is when we get the most amazing light. As a mater of fact photographers like this time of day so much that we have a special name for it, the golden hour. So if sunset is supposed to occur at 7:00 the day of your session I suggest scheduling the start time for 5:00.
- Where should we have our photos taken?
Most photographers including myself have favorite locations to shoot at. Most of my favorites are outdoors with plenty of light and multiple scenes close together. However there are a few indoor location I love shooting at as well. But most of all I say pick a place that you have a connection with. Where was your first (or favorite) date? Where did the proposal take place? Or do you just have a favorite place to hang out?
- What should we wear?
First you should choose clothes that are light or neutral. You don’t want to wear a pattern or bright color that will immediately grab someones attention and take that attention away from the subject of the photo, which is you and your fiancé. Second you want to compliment your partner but not match. When planning your outfits think complimentary colors but not identical outfits. Gone are the days of blue jeans and white shirts for portraits. But most of all be yourself. You don’t want to wear something that makes you feel other than yourself and make you feel uncomfortable. If you are a blue jeans and flip-flops kind of girl (I may or may not be referring to myself here) you don’t want to pull out the evening gown for this session.
- Have your hair and makeup professionally done.
If you are like most brides you have searched high and low for your Hair and makeup artist(s). Why not use this day as a trial run with who you have selected to make sure they understand the look you are going for on your wedding day. Not only will you look beautiful for your photos but having your hair and makeup professionally done also tends to boost ones confidence making sure you will rock the session.
- What to expect at the session.
Every photographer is different. Some have certain poses they to use other just catch the candid images. I am a mixture of both. I like to use prompts. Throughout the session I’ll give you little instructions and capture your reactions. Things like “Whisper into his ear, in a sexy voice, what you had for breakfast.” are the norm for me.
Most of all I want this to be a fun experience for you and your partner. Think of it as a date with a professional third wheel tagging along. Just relax and be yourselves. We are sure to have a great time!
